Since the filtering change is my project, I should probably add some comments.
The request form is now at http://www.nycboe.net/offices/diit/filtering/
If you go to the old location it will redirect you automatically. The
form only works from VLAN 2.
Manhattan and Bronx schools will get switched over next week on Monday
night. Everyone else has already been put on Websense.
Elementary schools seem to have two schools of thought - some want to
allow kids to play games, others detest them.
High schools range from those that want Entertainment blocked (no more
MTV, BET, WWE) and those that want to unblock Instant Messaging,
Streaming Media and Internet Radio. A few of those schools have toyed
with the idea of unblocking Social networking, but only one has
followed through. Streaming Media involves video content within
websites, created and hosted by those sites. Sites like youtube that
host user-created video fall under Social Networking.
The two biggest differences between Symantec and Websense are 1) no
more reading the text of webpages (which is why it is faster) and 2)
much more accurate categorization (it isn’t perfect, but Symantec was
swiss cheese).
If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.
